  1. For cooking dal
  2. 1 bowl tuvar dal
  3. 3 bowls water
  4. As per taste Salt
  5. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  6. 1/8 tsp asafoetida
  7. For tadka
  8. 2 tbsp cooking oil
  9. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  10. 1 chopped onion
  11. 1 Tomato
  12. 2 green chillies
  13. 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  14. 1 tsp kasuri methi
  15. 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
  16. 1/4 tsp garam masala
  17. For Tempering -
  18. 1 tsp pure ghee
  19. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  20. 2 whole red chillies
  21. 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

Instructions to make to make Dal Fry

  1. Wash tuvar dal 2-3 times in running water. Strain the water and put it in a pressure cooker. Add salt, turmeric powder, asafoetida, and water and pressure cook till 2 whistles. Switch off the flame. Let pressure release automatically.
  2. Heat cooking oil in a wok. Add mustard seeds and when mustard seeds splutter add chopped onion and saute for 1 minute. Add ginger and garlic and stir well and cook till oil leaves the wok. Add chopped tomato.
  3. Cook on low flame for 2 minutes. Add salt, red chili powder, garam masala, and mix. Add cooked dal and crushed Kasuri methi.
  4. Cook till dal boils. Add water if required. I have added 1/4 bowl of water.
  5. Heat pure ghee in a separate pan. Add cumin seeds and red chili powder and whole red chili. When cumin seeds splutter switch off the flame.
  6. Pour this tempering on dal. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with chapatti or rice.
